In this economy, we are all finding ourselves having to cut back on things we could once afford without even thinking twice about it. However, with the dollar going down and the prices of items going up, many things in our lives have had to take a step back. Your health shouldn’t be one of them.

Eating healthfully doesn’t have to put a dent in your weekly budget for food, and it certainly shouldn’t determine whether or not you face the onset of disease or obesity. There are many ways to design and create your own grocery shopping tips that are sure to keep you within your range of expenses. Here are five simple steps to get you started.

 

STEP 1:

Eat more at home. By cooking budget friendly recipes at home rather than dining out, you will be surprised at how much you actually save as well as how much better it is for your health. Home cooked meals allows yourself more time with your family, turns out to be better on the pocket and you know exactly what is going into your food. No hidden saturated fats, no extra salt, etc.

 

STEP 2:

Planning is everything. By planning your week’s menu in advance, you will be able to take into consideration what you really need versus what you think you need. By making shopping lists for your ingredients in their exact quantities, you will be able to save on costs because sometimes you think you need extra when you don’t.

 

STEP 3:

Do not sacrifice your health because you claim the costs are higher for healthier items. Buy the generic and local versions of items when they are available. You don’t necessarily need to buy the most expensive brand in the store. Supermarkets are filled with different brands and choices for the consumer to choose from. Buying local products also allows you to cut costs while experiencing more healthful and fresher food.

STEP 5:

Never be ashamed to use coupons or get the customer discount card. These coupons and cards allow customers to take advantage of any sales or specially priced items that would normally not be within budget. It is always a smart move to do your research where this is concerned because in the long run it definitely pays off.

While there are many ways to cut your costs while trying to eat healthy on a budget, the five steps mentioned should be able to get you started on a better, more hopeful path to cutting your costs and sticking to a healthy lifestyle.  With a little effort, organization and creativity, you no longer have any excuses why you cannot save money and also look and feel at your best.
